For the past month or more, my blog posts have been focused on the cruise we took from Puerto Rico. As you may have guessed from the title of my blog (~ Straddling Continents and Cultures ~), some of my time is spent living in the U.S. or doing things that may be familiar to a lot of people and some of my time is spent travelling to south Asia or doing (south Asian) things that may not be so familiar to a lot of people but are awesome nonetheless. It's not a 50-50 balance...some days it's more like 80-20, 60-40, 30-70, or 10-90. Anyway it's only a matter of time before the pendulum that is my life swings back towards the desi side of things. That time is coming.
As I mentioned WAAAYYYY back in October (blog post: What to wear...what to wear...?), we'll be attending a desi wedding soon. It's hard to keep my excitement about it under wraps. Desi weddings involve a LOT of awesome stuff.
For one thing, there's a LOT of partying--on both the bride and groom's sides--in the nights before the wedding happens. The partying starts around 10pm and typically goes into the early morning hours of the next day. In the weddings I've attended, there's dancing, some of which involves elaborate practiced dance routines like you might see in a Bollywood movie. (For those interested, the title of this blog post is "Baila! Baila!", which is a line used from the song Jai Ho and which translates to "Dance! Dance!" in Spanish.)
If Americans like to have everything orderly and organized, then south Asians thrive on chaos, and it wouldn't truly be a desi wedding function if it wasn't chaotic. There are always way too many people staying in the house (we're talking people sleeping on mattresses on the floor, kind of full) and multiple rental cars going out to different parts of the city for bangles shopping, pick ups from the tailors, and other last minute errands. If arriving to a wedding function EXACTLY at the time the invitation says to arrive is your thing, then attending a desi wedding function (or even a regular desi function, for that matter) may not be your thing.
Everyone likes to dress up and the clothes are of red carpet quality. My saas (mother in law) and nand (sister in law) have already made me quite a few clothes, so I'm excited to see how they've turned out.
I guess what I'm getting at is...I'm excited to get this party started!
