Desi weddings have great music!

In desi weddings, there's typically dancing at home during dance parties with family, but there's really no dancing during the formal dinner receptions.

We just returned from a trip to south Asia where we attended a wedding. This was my 3rd wedding in south Asia (counting my own) and each one has been completely unique. Regretfully, this wedding wasn't as much focused on dancing as the other 2 seemed to be.

Desi weddings are always a source of great dance music and this one was no exception. As I mentioned in my Baila! Baila! blog post, I'm talking about dance songs with full-on choreographed moves. (Incidentally, videos of these songs are also good for seeing some amazing clothes.)

The songs from weddings are the kind that stay with you for years even after the wedding is done and gone. (Both my husband and I still listen to the ones that were popular during our wedding time.) They're mostly sung in Hindi or Urdu, both of which I'm not completely fluent in, so what usually grabs me is the beat or the melody. I've also noticed that I tend to gravitate towards songs that have partial English in them.

So which songs during this desi wedding struck a chord with me? Here's my current playlist (I've embedded/linked to the YouTube videos so you can check them out):
  • Kambakkht Ishq - Bebo song
  • From Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani movie - Tu Jaane Na
  • From Love Aaj Kal movie - Twist
  • Fuzon - Deewane
  • and this one's my FAVORITE!:
  • Dostana - Desi Girl

If you're interested, you can also Google any of these song titles + English + translate to find the lyrics in English.

Now that I'm back in the states, I'm getting some funny stares at stop lights when I have these songs blaring and am literally dancing in my seat.
