Nobody likes to be sick, and I'm certainly no exception. In fact, I hate it (especially when it's something as simple as a common cold). I hate those taking-cough-syrup-and-cough-drops-staying-home-watching-daytime-tv-napping-in-the-middle-of-the-day days. I'm sooo not a fan.
About 3 days ago, my husband came home with a sore throat and stuffy nose. Since then, I've been bringing him soup (in a couple of different varieties!) and tea. Even with me trying to take care of him, we still made our best effort to steer clear of each other to avoid passing whatever "bug" he has (had?) between us.
But it seems that was all for naught because now I feel slightly sick.
It's just a cold, and it doesn't (yet?) seem as bad as what my husband has (had?), so hopefully I'll feel better in a few days (iA). But, in the meantime, I can't help but think of what remedies would help speed up my recovery.
Whenever I got sick when I was younger and was still living at home, my mom would make me strawberry smoothies (sometimes multiple times a day!) until I felt better. I'm not sure that they had any special "healing powers," but they at least tasted good. (Even as an adult, I still like to have smoothies when I'm sick!)
Whenever I got sick when I visited my in-laws in Pakistan, my saas (mother in law) would trace/write some special words of prayer on my forehead (with her finger). I've gotten sick to my stomach quite a bit during my trips to south Asia, and when that happens, my saas makes me daal chawal (daal with rice) to eat.
Now that my husbandhas the spring back in his step is about 80-90% recovered, it's kind of his turn to do the taking care of. My husband and I have different methods for getting over illnesses quickly. He tends to rely on regular cups of hot tea (which I'll admit does seem to help somewhat with the sore throat) while I'm more of a load-me-up-with-whatever-over-the-counter-drugs-you-can-find kind of gal.
So you better believe I'll be washing down my lunch today with a strawberry smoothie followed by a cough syrup chaser.
And while everyone else is enjoying their Memorial Day BBQs...I'll be holed up in the house watching reruns on TV. In between napping, that is.
What kinds of remedies do you use for getting over a cold (or other illness) quickly?

My saas gives me daal chawal as well whenever I have an upset stomach. I don't know whether it works but it tastes good!
