Do something that scares you. . .

This time tomorrow morning, I will be doing something new.  And different. And scary.

Let me back up a little bit. My in-laws arrived in early June and stayed until mid-July. And in the weeks leading up to their arrival, I didn't get much time to exercise. And the whole time they were here, we were eating amazing food (and lots of it) and having high teas with cakes and breads and cookies.  And all that time, I was just getting...well, lazy (and maybe a little fatty).

And although I'm not a huge fan of exercising (Ok, I hate it. I'm going to spare you the sidebar on how I'd rather be sitting on the couch watching 1 of my favorite TV shows.), I also know that exercise is a necessary evil.

During all that time when they were here, all my time was pretty much taken up with activities related to their trip or maintaining household stuff while they were here.  And when my in-laws left, it was like there was this humongous hole.

So I did what any crazy sane person would do: I filled it with another activity.

I went and signed up to do a half marathon.  (Yes, I was half crazy that day.)

I do a lot of shopping at Lululemon, which is (kind of an overpriced) an athletic store. (Their items are mostly focused on yoga but the clothes can work for any sport.) With every purchase, they give you a reusable shopping bag, and several years ago, the shopping bag had all these "handwritten" (and mass produced) notes and graphics on it, and one of them said something along the lines of "do 1 thing a day that scares you."  I'm kind of way behind on the doing-it-everyday part, but I've definitely got the doing-something-scary part nailed in this case.

So.  Tomorrow morning at 8am PST, I will be running my first ever, half marathon in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series.

I've trained for over 2 months, including running a 10K in August and a 5K in September.  (Now you guys know what I've been busy with all this time.)  At this point, I'm probably as ready as I'm ever going to be.  That said, I can't help but feel...a bit terrified.  I mean, this is big.  Colossal, big (for me, anyway).  Last I heard, there are over 10,000 runners registered for this event.

So, what's there to be afraid of?  Falling on my face, getting trampled with faster runners, having to walk the whole thing, having to walk part of it...oh, and not to mention my IT band has been giving me a bit of discomfort...so I'm praying that thing doesn't flare up and turn into a real injury.

Wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts...?

    1. Thanks!
I think it goes better after you "get in the groove"...but getting in the groove is the hard part.
